China says Taiwan’s independence “means war”

On Monday, November 27, a spokesperson for mainland China said it was ready to create a wide space for peaceful reunification across the Taiwan Strait, but would leave no room for separatist activities aimed at “Taiwan’s independence.”

This was reported by CGTN.

Chen Binhua, spokesperson for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council of the People’s Republic of China, made the statement in response to recent comments by politicians from the Democratic Progressive Party of Taiwan, Lai Ching-jeou and Xiao Bi-him, on relations across the Taiwan Strait.

According to media reports, they expressed the opinion that there are no plans on the mainland side to attack the Taiwanese region by force.

Chen said that the mainland would not tolerate or show leniency to the “Taiwan independence” forces if they dared to take risks and provoke incidents that would promote “Taiwan independence.”

Referring to the Anti-Secession Law, he said that the state should use non-peaceful means and other necessary measures to protect China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

“I want to emphasize that ‘Taiwan independence’ means war,” the spokesman added.

Chen said that Lai and Xiao, both supporters of “Taiwan independence,” distorted facts and downplayed the harmfulness and danger of separatist activities to deceive voters in the 2024 Taiwanese leadership elections.

He called on the people of the Taiwanese region to oppose “Taiwan independence” and to help return relations between the two straits to the path of peaceful development.

  • During talks with Joe Biden on November 15, Xi Jinping said that Taiwan is the biggest problem in China-US relations.
