DPRK launches “strategic cruise missiles” from a ship on the eve of NATO exercises

Secretary General Kim Jong-un has ordered all surface and submarine forces to constantly improve their combat capabilities in response to “sudden circumstances.”

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un was present during the training launch of sea-launched “strategic cruise missiles.” The missiles were fired from the patrol ship No. 661, which is about to begin its maritime patrol service, North Korea’s KCNA reported on August 21.

It is noted that the Secretary General inspected the 2nd Guards Division of surface ships of the East Sea Fleet of the Korean People’s Army (KPA), which performed training maneuvers in conditions close to real war. According to the agency, all targets were allegedly successfully hit.

“During the exercises, aimed at confirming the combat capabilities of the ship and the specifics of its missile weapons systems, as well as improving the combat skills of the crews in performing offensive tasks in combat conditions, the target was accurately hit without the slightest deviation,” the statement said.

Kim Jong-un also ordered that all surface and submarine naval units of the Navy thoroughly maintain constant mobilization, as well as constantly improve their combat capabilities in response to “sudden circumstances.”

For its part, South Korea’s Yonhap news agency reported that the DPRK had launched missiles designed to strike surface targets. Pyongyang is probably demonstrating its power on the eve of the Ulchi Freedom Shield joint military exercises of the South Korean Armed Forces with the US military, which are to take place from August 21 to 31 in South Korea.

As a reminder, on August 15, Kim Jong-un, General Secretary of the DPRK Communist Party, visited key defense facilities in the country and ordered a sharp increase in the production of missiles and ammunition. According to him, the country needs a surge of patriotic enthusiasm among the working class, as the DPRK is actively preparing for war.
