According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, the earthquake occurred at 12:16 a.m. in Iwate, Miyagi and Fukushima prefectures. The center of the aftershocks was located at a depth of about 40 kilometers.

According to the East Japan Railway Co, high-speed trains on the Tohoku Shinkansen line were temporarily suspended due to the earthquake.
