Elon Musk will be held accountable in court for his statements made before buying Twitter;
American billionaire Elon Musk will stand trial. The reason is his statements made between the announcement of his desire to buy Twitter and the conclusion of the deal, writes Bloomberg.
What is known
In the spring of 2022, Musk announced plans to acquire Twitter, which owned the social network of the same name. The deal was concluded in the fall of the same year, but a few months later, the American billionaire made a number of statements for which he will now have to answer.
The businessman tried to refuse to buy Twitter and accused the company’s management of deliberately distorting statistics on the number of bots and fake accounts. Despite the fact that the deal was eventually concluded, Senior Judge Charles Breyer of the Federal District Court for the Northern District of California ruled that the lawsuits filed by investors were legitimate.
In the end, the court found that Musk’s statements created a false impression of the state of affairs. The investors’ claims are based on three statements by an American businessman about the rejection of the deal and the share of fake accounts on Twitter.
At the same time, the court dismissed a number of lawsuits based on other statements by the billionaire. The reason was the plaintiffs’ inability to prove that Musk’s statements were misleading or false.
