EU Introduces Revolutionary Changes in Driving Licenses and Reduces Age Restrictions
The European Union has adopted major changes to the driver’s license system, allowing truck driving from age 18 and introducing digital licenses on smartphones. The reform aims to address the shortage of professional drivers and improve road safety in the EU.
Revolutionary Innovations in Traffic Rules
The European Parliament and EU Council have agreed on revolutionary changes to driver’s licensing rules, which will significantly modernize the driver training system and expand opportunities for young professionals. According to the new EU directive, the minimum age for obtaining a truck driving license is reduced from 21 to 18 years, provided there is a certificate of professional competence.
Special attention in the updated rules is given to preparing drivers for real road situations. The training program will include practical lessons on driving in difficult weather conditions, interaction with vulnerable road users, and the use of modern driver assistance systems. Additionally, candidates will study the risks of using mobile phones while driving and the specifics of driving with limited visibility.
A revolutionary innovation will be the opportunity for 17-year-old drivers to operate trucks under the supervision of an experienced instructor. This accompanied driving system is being implemented to address the shortage of professional drivers in the EU and ensure gradual entry of youth into the profession.
All new drivers will undergo a mandatory two-year probationary period with enhanced restrictions on alcohol and safety violations. Driving licenses will be valid for 15 years for cars and motorcycles, with the possibility of reduction to 10 years in certain cases.
A significant step in digitalization will be the implementation of electronic driving licenses in the EU e-Wallet, for which member states are given five years and six months. The option to obtain a physical license will remain available. The new rules are part of the EU’s comprehensive strategy to achieve zero road fatalities by 2050 under the Vision Zero policy.
The new EU driving license rules reflect the modern needs of the transport industry and the desire to improve road safety. The changes will take effect over the next four years, except for the implementation of digital licenses, which is allocated five and a half years.
