F-35 Lightning II fighters will be equipped with new anti-ship missiles capable of hitting targets at a distance of over 920 kilometers
The U.S. Navy wants its F-35A Lightning II to be able to destroy enemy ships with LRASM (Long Range Anti-Ship Missile) missiles. The ability to engage maritime targets will be an important milestone for fifth-generation fighters.
The military service wants to arm the F-35 Lightning II with JASSM (Joint Air-to-Surface Standoff Missile) air-to-air missiles. The LRASM is also a subsonic, stealthy missile that has advanced technologies for precise targeting and guidance.
Despite the fact that the US Navy decided not to take JASSM-ER, in the case of LRASM, the military service wants to use the extended range version. We are talking about AGM-158C-3 LRASM-ER. The Lockheed Martin missile is capable of hitting targets within a radius of over 920 km.
LRASM is of greater importance for the F-35 Lightning II, as the fifth-generation fighter has not yet received an anti-ship missile. This is due to the fact that the integration of the Norwegian Naval Strike Missile (NSM), which is called the Joint Strike Missile (JSM) in the aviation configuration, has not yet been completed.
