Fatal accident due to Tesla autopilot in the US: court rules in favor of the company
A California jury has ruled that Tesla is not responsible for a fatal accident that occurred in 2019 due to the autopilot system.
The lawsuit claimed that Tesla knowingly released cars with a defective autopilot system, which led to the death of the Model 3 owner and the injury of two passengers. The trial was the first in the United States to allege that Tesla’s software directly caused a person’s death.
Tesla’s lawyers claimed that there was no defect and that the situation referred to by the plaintiffs was a theoretical possibility. After a lengthy trial, the jury decided that there was no defect in the system, which cleared Tesla of the charges. This is the first fatal lawsuit for Tesla, but there are several other lawsuits that will take place in the near future.
