Five films that can represent Ukraine at the 96th Academy Awards: the committee chooses a contender

The Oscar Committee of Ukraine has closed the submission of applications for participation in the Oscar selection in the Best International Feature Film category.

The press service of the Ukrainian Film Academy reported that the list includes five films:

  • 20 Days in Mariupol, directed by Mstislav Chernov.

This documentary was created by Associated Press journalists who stayed in occupied Mariupol and filmed the siege of the city from the beginning of the attack by Russian troops on February 24, 2022.

  • Iron Butterflies, directed by Roman Liubyi.

The documentary tells the story of the investigation into the downing of Malaysian Airlines flight MH17 by the Russian military at the beginning of the Russian-Ukrainian war. The film reveals the circumstances of this war crime, the investigation of which lasted 8 years.

  • Pamphire, directed by Dmytro Sukholytkyi-Sobchuk.

The film Pamfir revolves around a family living in a border village in Bukovyna. The head of the family returns home after a long period of working abroad and encounters difficulties that have affected his family. The events take place during the Malanka holiday and are based on the biblical story of Abraham. Pamfir grossed UAH 2.4 million in its first weekend at the box office, which is one of the best results among Ukrainian dramas.

  • Terricones, directed by Taras Tomenko.

The film tells the story of children who experience war firsthand. They suffered from shelling, lost their parents and loved ones, but did not give up in the face of war. The painting shows a childhood that continues despite the war.

  • STTL, directed by Adrienne Walter.

This story tells of the love between the young residents of a shtetl, a small town in the Lviv region, in June 1941, the day before the Nazi offensive. The film has a historical basis and depicts the fate of the town of Sokal, which fell victim to the German army during World War II.

The committee will review all the applications and select the film that will represent Ukraine at the 96th Academy Awards.

It should be mentioned that in 2022 Ukraine was represented by the movie Klondike.
