For the first time in two years, the United States deployed fighters to Iceland – F-16 Fighting Falcons will serve as air police

Fourth-generation F-16 Fighting Falcon aircraft have been moved to Iceland. For the first time in two years, the US Air Force deployed fighter jets in the country.

Four F-16 Fighting Falcon aircraft left Germany and arrived in Iceland. On October 22, 2023, fourth-generation US fighter jets deployed to the Icelandic military base of Keflavik.

The F-16 Fighting Falcon landed in Iceland about a month after the B-2 Spirit nuclear bombers left the country. The visit to Iceland concluded a three-month deployment for strategic aviation aircraft.

The fighter jets will serve as air police within the framework of NATO’s mission in the High North. The deployment of the F-16 Fighting Falcon in Iceland will last until November 12, 2023.

For 15 years, the United States has been trying to regularly deploy fighter jets to Iceland. Given the geographical location, the authorities agreed that the appropriate mechanism to ensure airspace security is to maintain a periodic presence of NATO fighter aircraft at Keblavik Air Base.
