FrankenSAM: Ukraine has developed a SAM for Western missiles (photo)

The United States launched the FrankenSAM project (translated from English as Frankenstein and SAM), which helped Ukraine develop an anti-aircraft system capable of firing at air targets with foreign-made missiles. This was reported to AP by a senior Pentagon official.

The new SAM is compatible with the AIM-9M Sidewinder. Radars and other components necessary to create systems for Western missiles were supplied by the Allies. American and Ukrainian engineers have also developed a technical solution that makes it possible to launch RIM-7 missiles from Buk SAMs. A huge number of such anti-aircraft missiles are stored in the Pentagon’s warehouses.

Both systems will be put into service with the Ukrainian air defense forces by the end of the fall. The U.S. Defense Department has included AIM-9M and RIM-7 missiles in previous support packages. The Pentagon believes that FrankenSAM will significantly strengthen Ukraine’s air defense.

The official noted that the United States is currently busy restoring HAWK systems. The US army has a lot of missiles for them. The Armed Forces of Ukraine are already operating such systems. They were supplied by Spain.
