From now on, license plates can be sold together with the car in Ukraine
This will be free of charge, unless the license plate is registered or paid for.
If the new car owner likes the number assigned to the previous owner’s car, this license plate can be left behind for the purchased car. And most often it is free of charge. This became permissible as a result of the entry into force of Resolution of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine No. 454 of May 2, 2023.
This action is possible when entering into a purchase and sale agreement and when re-registering a vehicle at a service center of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
However, there is an exception to the new rule. If license plates are paid for or customized, a different procedure applies.
If the car has license plates with a corresponding combination of numbers (the so-called “round numbers”) and they are classified as paid, the new owner will be able to keep them only if they pay their cost at a service center of the Ministry of Internal Affairs. And this is from UAH 4,800 to UAH 36,000. The only exception is that if the car is registered to a relative (the other spouse, parents, children), then you do not need to pay for the license plate again.
“Such changes are also being made to ensure that in the future, when concluding a sale and purchase agreement independently through the Diia app or through the Driver’s Electronic Office, there is an option to buy a car with a state registration plate,” the Ministry of Internal Affairs Service Center said in a statement.
