Future Xiaomi smartphones may be equipped with a lie detector

Chinese manufacturer Xiaomi has revealed how a smartphone can be turned into a real lie detector. The vendor received a patent for lie detection technology using a smartphone camera.

As the document specifies, this is a “printing method” that allows to determine whether a person is lying. One of the sensors of the photo module will be used for this purpose.

The telephoto lens, which is used, among other things, for zooming, will be able to automatically frame a person’s face in front of the phone and analyze the slightest movement of their features. The built-in software then analyzes the image according to predefined parameters to reach a verdict.

It is currently unknown whether Xiaomi is developing a demonstration smartphone with this technology. Xiaomi may have obtained the patent only to protect its idea and possible invention.

Earlier, Israeli researchers from Tel Aviv University taught artificial intelligence to recognize facial muscle movements when someone is lying. They found that there are two types of liars: those who activate the cheek muscles when lying and those who use the eyebrow muscles. The system they developed showed a 73% success rate when all participants were unable to distinguish between truth and lies.
