Genesis is testing a new autonomous driving system

The spy photos show that the sensors will be hidden behind a modified Genesis G90 grille.

Genesis unveiled the second generation G90 just over a year ago, and while it may seem like a facelift is on the way, it’s not. Instead, the prototype wears camouflage on the front to hide the sensors needed for the upcoming main feature – LiDAR.

The new hardware will allow the full-size sedan to have a Level 3 autonomous driving system.

While the Lotus Eletre and Volvo EX90 electric SUVs from Geely have sensors mounted on the roof, the brand from Hyundai will do things differently. Genesis will place them on a large grille, above two parking sensors. If you don’t see the bulges, we’ve marked them on one of the attached spy shots. It remains to be seen how visible they will be when the masking is removed.

At this time, we have the impression that the LiDAR is better integrated, as the sensors do not stick out as much. The Genesis G90 won’t be the first production car to have LiDAR built into the front fascia, as the Lucid Air has a similar setup with a sensor mounted in the lower grille. Expect more and more vehicles to rely on this technology for sophisticated autonomous driving systems, including the Polestar 3 and the recently spotted Lotus sedan.

The Genesis won’t be the only member of the Hyundai Group to offer Level 3 autonomy, as it has already been confirmed that the upcoming Kia EV9 will feature Highway Driving Pilot (HDP). Expect this technology to spread to smaller and more affordable models in the coming years. In the meantime, logic tells us that the Hyundai Ioniq 7, due out in 2024, and the yet-to-be-announced Genesis GV90 are likely candidates for LiDAR.
