Google Drive removed the 5 million file attachment limit – it was introduced unnoticed, which upset subscribers
Google has removed the limit on the number of files you can add to Drive. It was recently introduced secretly, which was discovered by users. The company stated that the restriction affected only a small number of accounts. Google is currently exploring alternative options for the restriction.
Google Drive’s Twitter account said: “We recently released a systemic update to drive element limits to maintain stability and optimize performance. While this only affected a small number of people, we’re reversing this change as we explore alternative approaches to ensure a great experience for everyone.”
In February, some Gogol Drive users encountered an error when uploading files failed. A company spokesperson confirmed that in their case, there was a limit of 5 million files created to “prevent misuse of the system in a way that could affect stability and security.”
The initial restriction was not reported, and Google received a lot of criticism from users. The situation is exacerbated by the fact that the restriction affected paid users, including those who have subscribed to the highest level of Google One, which provides up to 30 TB of storage.
For those who frequently create or upload small files, it was quite possible to reach the set limit on the number of files. In addition, there is no counter on Google Drive that could warn users about the imminent exhaustion of the limit. Technically, this was not the best approach, and it turned out to be a compromise to users who expect Google to be more open in the future.
