Great Britain received the fifth Astute nuclear submarine with Spearfish torpedoes
The Royal Navy of Great Britain has been replenished with the fifth nuclear submarine of the Astute class. She was named HMS Anson.
A solemn ceremony dedicated to the new nuclear submarine was held in the port of Barrow-in-Furness in England. The event was attended by Boris Johnson, Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.
HMS Anson is manufactured by BAE Systems. The Swedish-British company produced four other Astute-type submarines. The first submarine is called HMS Astute. It appeared in 2010. HMS Ambush, Artful and Audacious were subsequently inducted into the ranks in 2013, 2016 and 2020 respectively.
HMS Anson can reach speeds of up to 29 knots (53.7 km/h). The working depth of immersion is 300 m. The submarine has six 533-mm torpedo tubes with Spearfish torpedoes, Tomahawk cruise missiles and Harpoon anti-ship missiles.
The cost of HMS Anson was £1.3 billion. In total, the Royal Navy of Great Britain wants to get seven submarines of the Astute type. They will replace the Trafalgar-class submarines, which appeared about 40 years ago.
