Happy Independence Day! Google decorated its home page with a festive doodle drawn by an artist from Kyiv
This year’s Independence Day is no less special than last year’s (and indeed any past or future) as Ukrainians continue to defend their right to freedom and life and to a free and independent Ukraine in the ongoing courageous fight against Russia’s invasion. This national holiday honors the unbreakable spirit of the Ukrainian people and the memory of all those who gave their lives for their country – including those who are fighting right now. Traditionally, Google has changed the usual logo on the home page and decorated it with a new special doodle that most Ukrainians have probably already noticed.
It was on this day in 1991 that the Verkhovna Rada adopted the Act of Independence of Ukraine, and the deputies hung the national flag in the session hall, marking the withdrawal from the Soviet Union.
This colorful doodle depicts a parade with representatives of different segments of Ukrainian society, united by their common pride in their country and its independence, moving into the future. It was created by Kyiv-based artist Polina Doroshenko. The yellow and blue colors of the Ukrainian flag used in this doodle give it a special national character, symbolizing the clear sky that envelops the endless wheat fields that can be seen all over the country. In addition, the doodle represents the indomitable spirit of the people and their love of freedom.
“In the doodle, I wanted to show that we are both different and united; and I put meanings in most of the details – starting with the color of the sneakers, details of traditional clothing and embroidery, and the ceramic rooster, which has become a symbol of unbreakability, resilience, despite all the current challenges. Here we can see the prototypes of both contemporaries and people who celebrated Ukraine’s independence 32 years ago.”
