How the development of artificial intelligence is changing the world

Artificial intelligence has been working for people for decades. Its unique capabilities are used in a variety of areas: from creating presentations to remote sensing of the Earth’s surface. The new technology is developing rapidly. AI is becoming more sophisticated every year, promising to bring about tremendous changes in everyday life, medicine, law, and education. At the same time, there are more and more warnings about potential dangers, such as the disappearance of many professions or even the uprising of machines predicted by science fiction writers. In this article, we will try to find out what the neural network has already learned and what to expect from it in the near future.

AI achievements in medicine

Artificial intelligence has learned to diagnose a number of common diseases at the expert level: cardiovascular, oncological, ophthalmic, etc. The neural network also accurately identifies dangerous infections and age-related diseases. In addition to making a diagnosis, the computer mind provides treatment recommendations. One of the biggest achievements of AI in medicine is speech synthesis. The algorithmic technology reads the neural activity of the cerebral cortex and converts the received impulses into a sound similar to a human voice. Artificial intelligence can reproduce almost 80% of human speech. This will help people with speech impairments and paralyzed people to communicate fully.

Artificial intelligence and art

AI art is based on a detailed analysis of the works of artists, writers, and musicians. The neural network scans millions of images and generates music, paintings, poetry, and prose as a result. According to a study by the international consulting company McKinsey & Company, artificial intelligence is able to determine what influences people’s emotions. This means that the neural network will soon learn to depict feelings in a subtle way and control our perception of reality.

To create an illustration based on a text description, you just need to use the DALL-E AI or the Midjourney image generator, which supports a wider range of styles. These systems are able to interpret and combine heterogeneous concepts, which is the basis of creativity.

Artificial intelligence as a content generator

The neural network is able to generate extremely realistic photos and videos that can be difficult to distinguish from the real thing. For example, Nvidia has created a system that produces images of human faces based on the analysis of several hundred celebrity photos. The same AI can construct photos of animals, plants, and objects that are almost impossible to recognize compared to real ones. Some experts warn that the use of artificial intelligence will soon make it harder to fight fake news.

Robot assistants

Multinational corporations Google and Microsoft are already selling home assistants designed to help owners cope with simple household tasks. AI systems turn on the lights and ventilation or provide you with the latest news. Over time, robot assistants will receive more sophisticated software and become permanent human assistants.

Chatbots with artificial intelligence

Chatbots with built-in artificial intelligence are becoming increasingly popular. The most advanced chat service available today is GPT-4, which thoroughly analyzes the amount of information provided and compiles meaningful, concise answers. GPT-4is able to transcribe audio, summarize long articles, write large structured texts, and imitate the style of writers of the past. Another chatbot, Replika, is programmed to learn users’ communication style, adapt to it, and provide emotional support. The creators hope to turn chatbots into real virtual friends.

“Smart homes”

The purpose of the smart home system is to make life more comfortable. AI monitors home security, optimizes electricity and water consumption, controls communications, and even cleans the house. Today, there are not only smart homes, but also entire cities. The leaders of the 2023 smart city ranking are Zurich, Switzerland, Oslo, Norway, and Canberra, Australia.

Artificial intelligence is penetrating deeper into our reality, moving from scientific laboratories to apartments and gadgets. The introduction of AI opens up many opportunities and carries very real risks. The biggest problem is the possibility that the neural network can be used for malicious purposes, or that it will start learning unacceptable things, which sometimes happens with chatbots. It is difficult to make predictions, but the future definitely belongs to artificial intelligence. After all, the advantages of AI are undeniable: the ability to quickly process huge amounts of information, lack of fatigue, and the ability to learn.

To protect citizens and prevent possible problems, the European Union plans to adopt a law by 2025 that will regulate the development of artificial intelligence systems.
