Hubble photographs irregular galaxy close to Earth ESO 174-1

Scientists have obtained an image of the ESO 174-1 object. It is an irregular galaxy located not far from us, according to the NASA website.

What is known

ESO 174-1 is located 11 million light years from Earth. On a galactic scale, it can be considered a neighbor of the Milky Way.

The photographed galaxy looks like a thin cloud of white gas. You can see distant stars through ESO 174-1. The photo of the irregular galaxy was obtained as part of a project to study the Milky Way’s neighbors. Astronomers believe that they will be able to see the brightest stars located within a radius of 32 million light years.

Irregular galaxies are widespread in the Universe. They can be shaped like rings or spheres. It is assumed that this is due to interaction with larger galaxies. For example, during a merger or a consolidation. In addition, scientists believe that spiral galaxies can turn into elliptical galaxies over time.
