Impressive footage: what the legendary airport in Chornobayivka looks like after liberation

A Radio Svoboda journalist showed what remained of the legendary airport in Chornobayivka near Kherson, which was occupied by the Russian army for 8 months.

‘It’s a chest of metal and burned equipment,’ he described what he saw. The shots they took are truly impressive: around dozens of units of destroyed equipment of the occupying forces and damaged civilian infrastructure.

What is Chernobaivka?

In fact, Kherson International Airport is located in Chornobayivka, which has been developing in recent years and underwent large-scale reconstruction before the war.

Here, the apron with parking lots for airplanes was reconstructed, the runway was renovated, and in 2022 they were preparing to expand the departure area in the terminal, because the old one was already too small.

How the renovated airfield in Chornobayivka looked a few weeks before the start of the large-scale Russian invasion can be seen in the video below.

Before the war, the number of flights from Kherson increased. Turkish Airlines, UIA, Bees Airline flew here, and the largest European low-cost carrier Ryanair came here. He sold very cheap tickets from Kherson to Europe.

Why did Chornobayvka become legendary?

After the occupation of the region in February 2022, the Russian troops tried hard to set up their base at the Chornobayivka airfield.

However, the Ukrainian military repeatedly destroyed equipment and warehouses that the occupiers tried to accumulate at the airport. The number of such attempts exceeded 20.

Due to the fact that the Russians placed equipment near the terminal, the building was damaged and partially collapsed. This airport was used to serve passengers of international and domestic flights from Kherson.
