In Greece, a herd of sheep ate 300 kg of cannabis, after which they jumped “higher than goats”

Near the town of Almirós in Thessaly, Greece, sheep entered a greenhouse growing therapeutic marijuana during a storm and unexpectedly ate nearly 300 kg (600 lbs) of the plant’s crop.

Source. NewsWeek writes about a “bad year” for Greek farmers.

Storm Daniel resulted in the highest monthly rainfall in Europe. Relentless rain wreaked havoc on the central region, including Greece, combining torrential downpours with landslides that destroyed roads and bridges and damaged vital water sources.

In an attempt to avoid flooding, a flock of sheep took refuge in a greenhouse, where they took the opportunity to eat more than 600 pounds of cannabis.

Confused, farmer Yannis Burunis then observed “strange behavior” in his flock.

According to him, the sheep “jumped higher than the goats, which never happens.”

“I don’t know whether to laugh or cry. We had a heat wave, and we lost a lot of crops. We had floods, we lost almost everything. Now this… The herd came into the greenhouse and ate what was left. I don’t know what to say, honestly,” he said.

In 2017, the Greek government legalized the use of cannabis for medical purposes. In 2023, Greece inaugurated its first-ever medicinal cannabis plant. The cultivation of cannabis for medical use has created the necessary economic opportunities for the country.

Companies began to make significant investments in the country. Greek government officials are looking to capitalize on potential economic benefits by introducing a regulatory framework for the cultivation, processing, and export of medicinal cannabis.
