In new versions of Windows, the usual Start button will be replaced by an AI assistant

Microsoft developers decided to abandon the legendary Start button, which debuted in Windows about 30 years ago. In future versions of the software platform, it will be replaced by the Copilot virtual assistant.

This was reported by PC World.

The news about the replacement of the Start button with the Copilot assistant came from Satya Nadella, who is the head of Microsoft. The top manager hinted that a virtual assistant instead of the Start button might appear in Windows 12.

The Copilot assistant is being developed by the software giant together with OpenAI as a more advanced replacement for Cortana. In 2023, the branded assistant was retired.

PC World journalists note that Windows users will interact with Copilot in the same way as with chatbots. Simply put, they will be able to send requests to the assistant. Copilot services will be available both in Windows itself and in separate applications.

Microsoft developers have already preinstalled the AI assistant in several Windows 11 builds, but deep integration into the system is not yet possible. The next version of the OS will support AI and cloud technologies.
