In the UK, a police van with artificial intelligence detects drivers using cell phones
The British police equipped a police van with AI cameras that identified drivers using a smartphone while driving.
What is known
Law enforcement officers from Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, together with the Thames Valley Police, conducted an operation from July 17 to 21 aimed at detecting commercial vehicles. It took place on the A34 and A303 highways, the BBC reports.
The van, equipped with artificial intelligence, uses two cameras to capture video. The first one is installed at a slight angle and allows you to determine whether the mobile phone is near the driver’s ear and whether the seat belt is fastened.
The second one is located at a steeper angle and allows you to determine whether the smartphone is being used to send SMS.
After the AI system automatically identifies offenses, the results are double-checked by a human and then forwarded to the police for review.
According to Simon Gomer, head of the Road Safety Unit, law enforcement officers identified 86 drivers suspected of using a phone while driving during the operation. 273 drivers or passengers were not wearing seat belts.
The police also detected 132 mechanical violations related to problems in the operation of cars.
