It’s official: the next Virginia-class nuclear-powered attack submarine will be called the USS San Francisco

The US Navy has chosen a name for the future Virginia-class nuclear submarine. The ship was sponsored by Nancy Pelosi.

The future nuclear-powered submarine with the SSN 810 will be called the USS San Francisco. This was announced on October 3, 2023, by US Secretary of the Navy Carlos Del Toro.

The USS San Francisco (SSN 810) will be the fourth ship to be named after San Francisco. The first ship is a cruiser that took part in the Spanish-American War and served in the North Sea during World War I.

The second ship named after the city is a heavy cruiser that took part in operations and battles off Cape Esperance, Guadalcanal, Guam, the Marshall Islands, and Okinawa in World War II. Its crew received 17 battle stars, a Presidential Unit Citation, four Medals of Honor and 32 Navy Crosses.

Finally, the third ship is a Los Angeles-class nuclear-powered submarine with the SSN 711. Since being decommissioned last year, she has served as a training vessel for the Navy’s Naval Nuclear Power Training Unit in Charleston, South Carolina.
