Latvia’s Foreign Minister: Ukraine will be able to hit Russia with weapons of allies

Baiba Braže noted that such things should not be publicly voiced, but there are countries that have given Ukraine weapons without restrictions on their use

Some countries have given Ukraine weapons that have no restrictions on strikes on Russian territory. This was reported by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Latvia Baiba Braže in an interview with Yevropeiska Pravda.

Western allies provide Ukraine with weapons with the agreement that Kyiv will not use them on Russian territory, she recalled. However, this approach may change, and according to Brazier, it is already changing.

Answering a clarifying question about whether some partners allow Ukraine to use their weapons to strike deep into Russia, the minister said: “There are already countries that have already provided Ukraine with weapons without such restrictions.” She added that international law allows for strikes on Russia, “on the places where Russia is attacking Ukraine.”

At the same time, Brazier believes that this and similar information should not be made public.

“Of course, not everything is announced publicly, and it is even better not to say it out loud until a certain time. The main thing is the impact on the battlefield. Because there is a choice here: either to speak out loudly about something or just to do what is necessary,” she said.

  • In June 2023, German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius said that international law allows Ukraine to use Western weapons on Russian territory in self-defense. However, he said, Berlin would not have wanted this.
  • In May of the same year, the administration of US President Joe Biden received assurances from Ukraine that the Defense Forces would not use American weapons to strike Russian territory.
  • In January 2024, the leadership of the parliamentary Defense Committee and the Finnish Ministry of Defense told Yle that Finland had not imposed any restrictions on its military assistance, and Ukraine could use the weapons provided by Finland in Russia as well.
