Leap Year 2024 paralyzes gas stations in New Zealand

On February 29, automatic gas stations in New Zealand temporarily stopped working due to a software glitch related to the fact that 2024 is a leap year, Reuters reports.

Allied Fuel, Gull, Z Energy, and BP said that some self-service gas stations were not working due to problems with the payment system, which was probably not programmed to work with the February 29 date.

The failure was soon resolved, but it was necessary to wait until the software update was downloaded at all gas stations.

Once every four years, an extra day appears in February, the so-called leap year.

In New Zealand, the new day starts earlier than in most countries, so it is the first to experience a leap day.

The exact cause of the failure is unknown at this time, but John Scott, CEO of Invenco Group, the software company, also said that the software failure occurred due to an extra day in the month.

The company promised to conduct a detailed investigation into the failure.
