Life in hospital for hacking: this is the sentence of the guy who leaked footage from the game GTA 6 (photo)
An 18-year-old hacker named Arion Kurtaj, who has autism, was sentenced to an indefinite hospital stay for posting videos of the upcoming game Grand Theft Auto 6 (GTA 6) online.
He is a key member of the international Lapsus$ gang, which has targeted tech giants including Uber, Nvidia, and Rockstar Games, causing nearly $10 million in losses.
The court ruled that Kurtaj was dangerous to society because of his hacking skills and desire to commit cybercrime. He is now in a hospital under guard, but he may be allowed to leave only when doctors recognize that he is not a danger.
During the court hearings, it was established that Kurtadzh had committed other crimes, including aggression, injuries and damage to property. His mental health assessment showed that he intends to continue cybercrime and is highly motivated to do so.
The court also considered the case of another member of the Lapsus$ gang, a 17-year-old boy, who was sentenced to an 18-month rehabilitation sentence. He was supposed to hack into the Nvidia and BT/EE systems and steal data, then demand a $4 million ransom, as well as steal directly from individuals through their cryptocurrency wallets.
It is not known how much money they earned from their cybercrime, as no company has acknowledged paying the hackers, and the hackers have not disclosed passwords to the captured cryptocurrency wallets. However, Rockstar Games said the hack caused them $5 million in losses and thousands of hours of employee time.
