Manta Ray underwater drone created that can go for a long time without charging

Northrop Grumman and the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) have announced the successful launch of the first full-size prototype underwater drone called Manta Ray. The vehicle, named after the manta ray for its unique shape, was designed to perform long underwater missions without the need for human logistical support or maintenance.

One of the main tasks set before the engineers was to significantly improve the drone’s energy efficiency, its movement capabilities, and increase its payload. The goals were aimed at providing the drone with the ability to operate independently for long periods of time, while supporting a wide range of missions.

The developers emphasized the importance of a combination of reliable autonomy and efficient drone control, which allows the drone to operate independently. “Unmanned underwater vehicles that operate for long periods of time without the need for external intervention will play a key role in intelligence operations,” said the DARPA program manager.

Manta Ray will be equipped with sensors for navigation, allowing it to avoid obstacles and identify potential underwater threats. This information will play an important role in mission planning and strategy development by military vessels and ports.

The Manta Ray project opens up new prospects for the use of underwater drones for military and research purposes, particularly in the areas of intelligence, monitoring and defense.
