Miners discovered an unusual wooden structure in Serbia that turned out to be an ancient Roman ship dating back about 1700 years.
Archaeological research has shown that the vessel could have been built and used in the III-IV centuries AD.
This was reported by Reuters.
The Roman city of Viminacium once stood on this site, located 70 kilometers from modern Belgrade. The ship could sail along the tributary that connected the city to the Danube.
Thanks to the moisture contained in the wood and sand, the 13-meter-long vessel was able to remain in relative safety for many centuries. Scientists intend to remove it from the ground and install it in an open-air museum dedicated to the Viminasium. To safely remove the object, engineers are developing a special crane.
