MPs propose to fine Ukrainians for drifting

A bill to introduce administrative liability for drifting was registered in the Verkhovna Rada.

The draft law number 9642 has already been published on the Verkhovna Rada’s website. It provides for a fine for drifting of UAH 8,500. Repeated drifting within a year is punishable by a fine of UAH 17,000 and deprivation of the right to drive vehicles for a period of six months to one year.

The amendments to the Code of Ukraine on Administrative Offenses proposed by MPs are formulated as follows:

  • Violation of the Traffic Rules by a driver, which is expressed in the intentional controlled skidding of a car (drifting), is punishable by a fine of five hundred tax-free minimum incomes.
  • Repeated violation of part one of this Article within one year shall entail a fine on the driver in the amount of one thousand tax-free minimum incomes with deprivation of the right to drive vehicles for a period of six months to one year.
  • Note. For the purposes of this article, intentional controlled skidding (drifting) shall be understood as the intentional performance of maneuvers by a controlled vehicle that cause the vehicle axle to skid while the vehicle is turning at the maximum possible speed.

According to the MPs, “the adoption of the draft law will have a positive impact on road safety, as well as on protecting people’s peace from the noise generated by drifting.” This is stated in the explanatory note to the draft law.
