Netflix launches cloud-based game streaming on PCs and TVs

Still in test mode

The video streaming service Netflix launched a gaming section on Android and iOS back in 2021, but these were separate applications for mobile devices. The company has now started testing game streaming on LG and Samsung TVs, some set-top boxes, and in the browser for PC and Mac users.

So far, the launch lineup includes only two games: Oxenfree by Night School Studio, a Netflix game studio, and Molehew’s Mining Adventure, a gem mining arcade game. Browser users can play with the keyboard and mouse, while others are offered to turn their smartphone into a controller.

A limited beta version in test mode has been made available to a small number of participants in Canada and the UK. Supported devices include:

  • Amazon Fire TV
  • Chromecast with Google TV
  • LG TV
  • Nvidia Shield TV
  • Roku
  • Samsung Smart TV
  • Walmart Onn

In the future, the possibility of game streaming should expand to other countries. Given Netflix’s extensive experience in streaming and the relative simplicity of games, it is hoped that the company will not repeat the mistakes of Google, which had to close Stadia.
