Next-generation Franco-German tank to receive combat laser, electromagnetic weapons, electronic warfare system and active defense
The French and German defense ministers are preparing to start negotiations on a next-generation tank project. The Franco-German holding company KNDS and the German defense concern Rheinmetall will take part in the event.
Negotiations are scheduled to start in 2024. After that, the project, called the Main Ground Combat System (MGCS), will be open to other European countries that want to participate in the development of a new main battle tank. This was stated by German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius.
At the same time, his colleague Sébastien Lecornu believes that the first step would be for countries to join as observers. The French Defense Minister announced talks with the Italian armed forces, which intend to receive new generation tanks.
France and Germany will develop project specifications by the end of the year. This became possible after the armies of both countries developed criteria for replacing the main battle tanks Leopard 2 and Leclerc. Sébastien Lecornu promises “hard technological breakthroughs.”
The future tank will have active protection to counter anti-tank shells and unmanned aerial vehicles. In addition to the standard cannon, it will be equipped with electromagnetic weapons, a combat laser and an electronic warfare system.
From 2024 to 2030, France will invest more than $530 million in the MGCS project. The new tank is expected to be in service by the mid-2040s. Around the same time, France, Spain, and Germany may receive a sixth-generation fighter jet.
