Nissan mothballed the plant in Russia

Nissan announced the extension of the ‘vacation’ of the plant in St. Petersburg.

Work at the production site was ‘frozen’ in the spring. We will remind, the enterprise of the Japanese company Nissan started its work in the summer of 2009. Previously, machines were produced here for the full production cycle, including welding, painting and assembly.

According to the latest data, the staff of the St. Petersburg plant numbered approximately two thousand people. The company announced the temporary stoppage of the conveyor back in the first half of March. Previously, it was assumed that the work of the Russian Nissan plant could be resumed at the end of September this year. However, now the Reuters agency, with reference to the Nikkei publication, reports that the shutdown of the conveyor of the St. Petersburg enterprise continues for at least another three months, until the end of 2022.

The production of several crossovers was established at the enterprise: Nissan Murano, X-Trail and Qashqai. Of the listed, the last two were most often included in the TOP-25 most sought-after cars in the Russian market.

It will be recalled that Nissan’s French partner from the alliance – Renault – left the Russian market, handing over its local assets. Thus, the share in Avtovaz went to a subsidiary structure of the Ministry of Industry and Trade (the NAMI institute), and the Moscow plant was transferred to the balance sheet of the capital’s administration (now the company was renamed from ‘Renault Russia’ to ‘Moskvich’).
