No need to replace batteries anymore: innovative solar cell technology presented in the US

A new advanced solar cell technology developed by California-based Ambient Photonics promises to completely change the approach to powering gadgets.

The cells, which can charge even in low light, provide power for devices such as TV remotes and computer mice and promise to eliminate the need for batteries.

The technology was unveiled at CES 2024, where Ambient Photonics announced a collaboration with Google to incorporate this innovative technology into a new consumer product that will be available in about 2024.

One of the key advantages of the new solar cells is their bifaciality – they are able to collect and generate energy on both sides. This allows them to provide enough energy to power home electronic devices. Previously presented elements had one-sided efficiency, but the new technology collects three times more light compared to their analogs.

Solar cells are inspired by photosynthesis and contain light-sensitive dye molecules, converting photons into electrons and creating a charge difference that leads to electricity generation. This method, based on the chemical composition of the dyes, provides high specific power.

Not only does this innovative technology promise to change the landscape of gadget power supply, but it can also significantly reduce the amount of electronic waste associated with the use of disposable batteries. Ambient Photonics claims that their technology is suitable for the mass market electronics and can solve the problem of insufficient energy in low light, which is typical for a number of traditional photovoltaic solutions.
