In Ukraine, 531,200 people were diagnosed with diabetes in 2023: the government is improving mechanisms for identifying and supporting people living with the disease.
This was reported by the press service of the Ministry of Health.
“November 14 is World Diabetes Day, and the world’s attention is focused on the problems of diagnosing, preventing and treating this disease. This year, 531,200 people in Ukraine were diagnosed with diabetes, last year – 489,934,” the statement said.
It is stated that 72 insulin products can be obtained under the Affordable Medicines program in Ukraine. Since the beginning of 2023, the National Health Service of Ukraine has paid more than UAH 1.5 billion to pharmacies for insulin dispensed under the reimbursement program. In total, 1,111,575 insulin prescriptions were written during the year, and 1,057,848 were filled.
“In addition, since October of this year, patients with type I diabetes have been receiving test strips for glucose meters under the reimbursement program. They can be obtained free of charge or with a small surcharge. It depends on which brand the patient chooses according to their glucose meter. To date, more than 3,300 prescriptions have been written for them. The list of reimbursement includes 23 brands of test strips,” the Ministry of Health said.
The individual risk of type II diabetes can be determined using the online test of the Center for Public Health at the link. And Ukrainians who have signed a declaration with a family doctor can undergo diagnostics free of charge.
For reference. Diabetes mellitus is a chronic disease in which the pancreas does not produce enough insulin or the body cannot use the insulin it produces effectively. In Ukraine, this disease ranks third in prevalence after cardiovascular diseases and oncology, and its course is often asymptomatic, which makes diagnosis and treatment very difficult, which means that the scale of the disease can be many times greater.
