OpenAI allows ChatGPT to be used for military purposes
The line stating that the company prohibits the use of its technology for “military and combat” purposes has disappeared from the OpenAI technology policy page.

The company updated the rules on January 10 “to make them clearer and provide more guidance on specific services,” as stated in the change log. Large Language Models (LLMs) are still not allowed to be used for anything that could cause harm.
The company also warns people against using its services to “develop or use weapons.” However, OpenAI has removed the wording regarding “military affairs and war”.
As OpenAI spokesperson Nico Felix told Intercept, the company “aims to create a set of universal principles that are easy to remember and apply, especially since their tools are now used worldwide by ordinary users who can now also create GPTs.”
The spokesperson refused to specify whether the ban on using the technology to “harm others” covers all military uses beyond weapons development.
