Poland restricts civilian flights due to military activity in the east of the country

From February 5 to May 5, 2024, Poland imposes restrictions on civil aviation due to increased military activity along its eastern borders. The Polish Air Navigation Service Agency has issued NOTAM N0604/2024, indicating restricted areas for civilian flights, in particular in the areas bordering Ukraine, Belarus, Slovakia and the Kaliningrad region of Russia. The list of cities affected by the restrictions includes Warsaw, Bialystok, Zamość, Chełm, and Przemyśl.

NOTAM (Notice to Airmen) is a text message containing information necessary for the safe operation of flights, including the introduction of temporary restrictions in the airspace, changes in air navigation services that are important for pilots and airlines. The issuance of such a warning is a standard procedure for informing the aviation community about events that may affect the safety of civil flights.

These measures were taken at the request of the military to ensure security in response to growing security threats on the country’s eastern borders. Detailed information on the restrictions and areas of NOTAM can be found on the specialized website Dlapilota.pl. It states that the order was prepared “at the request of the military”.
