“Red Sprite”: an astronaut managed to film a rare atmospheric phenomenon (photo)

European Space Agency (ESA) astronaut Andreas Mogensen has managed to capture a rare atmospheric phenomenon known as a red sprite.

The red sprite is a rare form of upper-atmospheric lightning that was confirmed to exist about 30 years ago.

Such cold plasma discharges occur over thunderstorm clouds that form at an altitude of 40 to 100 kilometers after a powerful lightning strike. The substance does not heat up to very high temperatures.
