Sales of electric vehicles in Ukraine have increased sharply despite frequent power outages

Ukraine has seen a significant increase in the popularity of electric vehicles, largely due to a sharp rise in fuel prices and a shortage of petroleum products caused by the military conflict in the east of the country since 2022. These circumstances have significantly increased the interest of Ukrainian consumers in alternative energy solutions, including electric vehicles.

In 2022, Ukraine imported 3,128 new and used electric vehicles from January to May, in 2023 this number increased to 9,736, and in 2024 it exceeded 20,000 units. The leader among brands in terms of popularity in Ukraine is Tesla, which occupies more than a quarter of the electric vehicle import market. The most popular models are Tesla Model 3, Volkswagen ID.4, and Nissan Leaf.

The European crossover Volkswagen ID.4, although not officially sold in Ukraine, is actively imported through “gray schemes” from China along with other electric models. Lviv, Odesa, Dnipro regions and Kyiv are leading the way in terms of the number of registered electric vehicles, which demonstrates the regional popularity of these vehicles. For example, in the Lviv region, 2808 electric vehicles were registered in the reporting period.

This trend demonstrates the growing interest of Ukrainian consumers in a sustainable and efficient mode of transportation that meets modern environmental safety and energy efficiency requirements.

Please note that sales of electric cars in our country are increasing even despite large-scale power outages in almost all regions, as well as the fact that the electricity tariff for households has increased since June 1, 2024. Now the electricity tariff for household consumers is UAH 4.32 per kilowatt, not UAH 2.64 per kilowatt as before. This means that electric car owners now have to pay more for charging their batteries.

Experts at the Institute for Automotive Market Research believe that electricity is still the cheapest form of energy in Ukraine. Therefore, the increase in electricity tariffs for households will not have a significant impact on the Ukrainian electric car market.
