Superior to artillery: Japanese demonstrate the latest Railgun railgun test (video)

Japan’s ATLA agency has published a video demonstrating the firing tests of the new Railgun railgun system.

The innovative Railgun weapon system demonstrates Japan’s commitment to creating next-generation weapons that will be deployed on both naval vessels and land-based platforms, ensuring strategic parity against potential adversaries in the region.

This advanced technology harnesses the power of high-speed projectiles, surpassing the capabilities of standard artillery systems. The test confirms Japan’s commitment to developing its defense capabilities, especially in terms of improving the security and strength of its navy.

Japan is developing a medium railgun capable of launching a projectile with a huge initial velocity of 2230 m/s (6.5 Mach). The railgun’s endurance of more than 120 shots and its current charge energy of 5 MJ demonstrate the superiority of this technology, and future development ambitions are aimed at achieving a charge energy of 20 MJ.

Unlike traditional firearms, railguns use electromagnetic forces to launch projectiles at high velocity. These high-speed projectiles, which have an initial velocity twice that of conventional projectiles, offer significant strategic advantages.

Increased projectile velocity leads to shorter combat times, expanded containment zones and extended range, which contributes to increased operational efficiency and effectiveness.
