Switzerland to voluntarily destroy 60 Rapier anti-aircraft missile systems that could help Ukraine

In the 1980s, Switzerland purchased Rapier air defense systems. Almost 50 years later, it was decided to dispose of them.

Switzerland began decommissioning Rapier in 2022, although the air defense systems were modernized in 2007. A total of 60 air defense systems will be disposed of in four stages. The first batch has already been destroyed.

Switzerland claims that it will adhere to a policy of neutrality, but some officials have criticized the government’s decision. In particular, François Pointet, a member of the National Council, believes that Rapier should have been transferred to the Ukrainian Armed Forces.

The anti-aircraft missile systems were developed by the British Aircraft Corporation in the 60s of the last century. Despite being 70 years old, the Rapier could help the Ukrainian Defense Forces destroy low-flying targets. The launcher uses MK 1 and MK 2 missiles. The maximum launch range is 8 km and the altitude is 5 km.
