Taiwan spots Chinese spy balloons near its air base

Over the past day, three Chinese balloons of unknown purpose flew near the Taiwanese Air Force air base.

Reuters reports this with reference to a statement by the Taiwanese Ministry of Defense.

“During the daily briefing on the actions of the Chinese military over the past 24 hours, the Ministry of Defense said that it had detected four balloons over the Taiwan Strait, three of which flew over the central part of the island,” the article says.

It is noted that the bullets flew 105, 160 and 159 nautical miles, reaching Ching Chuang Kang, where a large Taiwanese air force base is located.

“After that, the bullets disappeared at different distances,” Reuters reports.

The exact purpose of these balloons could not be established, but they could have been meteorological.

It is worth noting that this is not the first time that Chinese balloons have been spotted over Taiwan’s territory in the past few weeks.

“Taiwan is on high alert, monitoring China’s military and political actions ahead of the presidential and parliamentary elections scheduled for January 13. China considers the island part of its territory,” the agency reminds.
