Taiwanese tech giant TSMC has taken the entire order for the production of Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 chips, leaving nothing for competitors

Taiwan’s semiconductor leader TSMC has gained a monopoly on the production of the new generation of Snapdragon 8 processors. According to TrendForce, citing sources from TechNews, TSMC was chosen as the sole manufacturer of these chips.

What is known about this decision

Usually Qualcomm distributes its orders among several manufacturers, but this time they decided to put all the responsibility on TSMC. Earlier it was assumed that the new Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 would be produced by both TSMC and Samsung. However, according to recent reports, Samsung will not be involved in the production of these chips.

Reasons for Samsung’s exclusion

The main reason why Qualcomm refused to cooperate with Samsung is the latter’s unsatisfactory pace of implementing new 3GAP and SF3 processes, which are critical for the production of Snapdragon 8 Gen 4. Samsung tried to introduce the second generation of 3-nm technology using a more complex MBCFET transistor structure. However, this technology faced problems with low yields of usable products, which negatively affected production efficiency and reliability.

Advantages of TSMC

While Samsung was experiencing difficulties, TSMC was demonstrating stability and high efficiency in the use of its 3-nm process. The company plans to double its share of revenue from these technologies from 5% to 10%, which demonstrates their confidence in their own technological capabilities and market prospects.

Overall, Qualcomm’s decision points to changes in the global semiconductor manufacturing landscape, with TSMC moving to the forefront and Samsung being forced to rethink its strategies and technological approaches.
