The DPRK fired about 200 artillery shells off the west coast, forcing South Korea to evacuate residents from the Yeonpyeong Island group to shelters.
This is reported by Yonhap, referring to the information of the Joint Chiefs of Staff of South Korea.
The agency said it recorded artillery shelling from Cape Changsan, which is located north of South Korea’s northernmost island of Incheon, and Cape Deunsan, north of the western group of border islands of Yeonpyeong.
The shells hit the territory of the buffer zone, which was created in accordance with the military agreement signed on September 19, 2018, to reduce tensions at the border. The DPRK terminated the agreement unilaterally in November 2023. At the same time, South Korea has also suspended its operation in protest against the launch of the spy satellite.
In response to the missile launch, South Korea urgently evacuated civilians from the Yeonpyeong Island group to shelters. This happened after they received information about a North Korean provocation in the form of a strike on the island.
