What we know about the movie Dovbush
This historical adventure film by Ukrainian director Oles Sanin is called one of the most expensive in the history of Ukrainian cinema. A great epic story about a great epic hero is not really a literal illustration of the biography of the most famous of the Carpathian opryshky, but a search for answers to questions that were interesting to the director Oles Sanin in this topic and that are much broader than covering the fate of an individual. For example, when the hero’s name begins to mean something much more than himself. So the film is not only about the historical hero Oleksa Dovbush, but also about Ukrainians as such.
“Oleksa Dovbush fought for his land, people, and love,” reads the press release for the film. – “It is love that drives action and reflects true human values. Oleksa Dovbush did not seek fame, unlike his brother Ivan, who lived by the laws of a robber. Oleksa wanted to live a free life on his land with his beloved Marichka. These are the values that Ukrainians defend today.”
Starring: Sergei Strelnikov, Alexei Gnatkovsky, Daria Plakhtiy, Mateusz Kosciukiewicz, Agata Buzek, Piotr Zhirun, Pavel Zhirun, Alexander Mavritz, Dmitry Vivcharyuk.
Filming began in 2018, and in July 2021, it was reported that Dovbush was being completed in the Ivano-Frankivsk region.
Much of the film was shot in the Carpathians. It is interesting that the characters in the film do not speak the literary Ukrainian language, but rather a language close to the sound of the Ukrainian Carpathians.
The film Dovbush with a budget of UAH 120 million was released on August 24, 2023. A team of 3,000 people worked on the shooting, and more than 1,000 costumes were made for the movie. The most ambitious scenes involved 500 people, with 50 stuntmen in the frame at a time. The filmmakers went on expeditions, studied the crafts and techniques of the seventeenth century.
More than 20 locations were built or restored for the filming, including a fortress near Kyiv.
