The Ministry of Digital Transformation reports a critical situation with Internet providers in Kyiv: they are not ready for blackouts

In Kyiv, only 9% of fixed-line Internet subscribers have connections to PON-based networks that are resistant to long power outages. This is a critical situation
Yuriy Matsyk, director of the Fixed Internet Development Department at the Ministry of Digital Transformation, said this in an interview.

“Today, only 37% of fixed-line subscribers have connections to PON-based Internet networks that are resistant to long-term power outages. This is the average figure in Ukraine,” he said.

According to him, even the region is more prepared for blackouts than the capital.

“In Kyiv, Rivne, and Ternopil regions, it is about 60%, but in Kyiv it is 9%, which is a critical situation,” Matsyk said.

He explained that providers mostly use old technologies that do not support PON.

The Ministry of Digital Transformation is actively communicating with Kyiv operators to develop networks more actively, some are already planning upgrades and actively accepting applications for connecting new networks, the ministry representative said.

According to his estimates, the overall growth of PON subscribers in Ukraine last year was 28%.

Matsyk urged citizens to prepare for possible power outages on their own: find a provider that provides PON-based connectivity, buy a power bank or other uninterruptible power supply for a Wi-Fi router.
