The US Department of Defense has informed Russia of a planned test of an unarmed Minuteman III intercontinental ballistic missile to be held on the night of September 6.

An unarmed Minuteman III intercontinental ballistic missile will be launched from the Vandenberg Space Force Base. These tests were planned several years ago and are considered “routine”.

An unarmed Minuteman 3 intercontinental ballistic missile is launched during a performance test at Vandenberg Air Force Base, California, Tuesday, Feb. 23, 2021.

The main purpose of the launch is to test the effectiveness and accuracy of part of the US nuclear triad, including ballistic missiles, nuclear submarines, and strategic bombers.

“In accordance with standard procedures, the United States sent a pre-launch notification, in accordance with the Hague Code of Conduct, and notified the Russian government in advance, in accordance with our bilateral commitments,” said Pentagon spokesman Pat Ryder.
