The Tor browser for safe Internet surfing has received the Ukrainian language

The fresh version of Tor, which is a specially packaged Firefox 102 ESR browser, has received a number of improvements. Among them are additional interface languages, in particular Ukrainian.

Tor Browser version 12 is available for Windows, Linux, and macOS (as a custom binary that runs on both x86-64 and Arm Macs). The Tor package combines directly a web browser and client for The Onion Router, or TOR for short.

Tor 12.0, the project leaders say, is the first stable release of the browser that supports Albanian and Ukrainian languages, and they thanked ‘all the volunteers who worked hard to translate Tor Browser into each language.’

Previously, if you wanted to use Tor Browser on a PC in a non-English language, you had to find and download one of the appropriate language versions from the download page. Switching the language after installing Tor Browser was also not an easy task and required either adding a new language pack to the existing installation or re-downloading Tor Browser from scratch.

With TOR 12, this is a thing of the past: Tor Browser for desktop is now truly multilingual, meaning all supported languages are now included in a single package. For new users, Tor Browser 12.0 will automatically update upon launch to match your system’s language. And if you have updated Tor Browser 11.5.8, the browser will try to keep the previously selected display language.

In any case, it is now possible to change the display language without additional downloads via the Language menu in General Settings. But the developers still recommend restarting the Tor browser.

Naturally, combining multiple languages in a single download should increase the Tor Browser file size. However, the developers found a way to save money, so the difference in file size between Tor Browser 11.5 and 12.0 is negligible.

Accessing the Internet through TOR has two purposes. The first is that TOR hides where you came from, so you can’t be tracked by your IP address or even by general geographic area. Because of this, the authorities and special services dislike him very much.

The other is for accessing websites only visible on the TOR network. Such sites are immediately recognizable by their name – they usually have a hex string in their name (or instead) and end with .onion. You will not be able to open such sites with a normal browser.

The Brave browser also integrates the Tor client, but the official client is based on Firefox.
