The Ukrainian Armed Forces began using M933A1 mines with radio detonation in the air

Ukrainian mortar launchers have started using 120-mm American-made mines capable of detonating in the air against the enemy. Photos of the ammunition in the X were published by Weapons Illustrated.

The photo shows an M933A1 mine with an M783 electronic unified detonator manufactured by L3 Harris. It can be used in tandem with 60, 81 and 120 mm NATO-standard mines.

The electronic detonator can operate in the following modes

  • Radio detonation at a height of 2 meters (60/80 PRX);
  • Radio detonation at a height of 4 meters (120 PRX);
  • For fragmentation action (IMP);
  • For high explosive action (DLY).

Compared to contact detonation, radio detonation is more effective. It makes it possible to ensure that the fragments are scattered to the maximum possible radius.

Depending on the model of the electronic detonator, the principle of operation may vary. In general, the function of radio detonation is based on the capture of a radio signal reflected from a target. Simply put, the detonator sensor is made in the form of a radar.
