The US Air Force has ordered high-precision “smart” bombs StormBreaker

The US Air Force has signed a contract with RTX for the supply of SDB-2 precision-guided aerial bombs, also known as StormBreaker.

This is reported by the official website of RTX.

According to the signed contract, the Air Force will receive more than 1,500 GBU-53 StormBreaker precision-guided munitions from RTX.

The contract value is estimated at USD 345 million, which includes the bombs themselves, a logistics package and relevant documentation.

Today, the US Air Force is integrating this type of bomb into F-35, F-16, and F-15E aircraft, which will provide better capabilities in destroying ground targets over long distances.

The GBU-53 StormBreaker features a combined homing head that combines an inertial system, GPS, communication channel correction, a semi-active head and an active homing head.

Thanks to the use of the planning module, the maximum range of the bomb is approximately 130 km when dropped from an altitude of 8 km and a speed of about 1000 km/h.

The weight of the warhead is up to 50 kg, and the total weight of the bomb is 93 kg, which makes it possible to suspend a large number of these bombs on specially designed mounts.
