The world’s most powerful jet engine Pratt & Whitney F135: how and where it is created (photo)

Pratt & Whitney F135 Chief Engineer, Brent Weig, spoke about Pratt & Whitney’s jet engine manufacturing facility in Middletown, Connecticut, and showed the high-tech production that makes the F135 engine the most advanced fighter jet engine in the world.

He spoke in detail about the F135 engine core upgrade, a power module upgrade that Pratt & Whitney developed to provide customers with an affordable, low-cost and flexible way to provide the capabilities needed to modernize the aircraft.

“The most important thing for the fighter is to deliver more Block 4 weapons to the aircraft. To use these weapons systems, we need basic modernization. We need to provide more power and cooling, and it’s important to do that as soon as possible to get those weapons systems to the pilot,” Weig said.

The Pratt & Whitney F135 is an aircraft high-temperature turbojet twin-circuit engine with an afterburner developed by Pratt & Whitney for the 5th generation Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II fighter aircraft.

The F135 engine is a further development of the F119 engine, which is used on the fifth generation F-22 Raptor fighter aircraft. There is a variant for F-35B aircraft with vertical takeoff and landing, equipped with a rotary nozzle and a lifting fan.

Engine options:

-F135-PW-100 for F-35A

-F135-PW-400 for F-35C deck-based aircraft, featuring enhanced corrosion protection;

-F135-PW-600 for F-35B with short takeoff and vertical landing capability; It is equipped with a swivel nozzle, a Rolls-Royce lifting fan and side nozzles for roll stabilization.
